The article explains that more employers, especially larger companies, have started using various types of surveillance tools to track remote employees during the pandemic. While these tools can help employers ensure their employees are productive, the article also explores the negatives that can come with such “Big Brother” hyper scrutiny.
In the article, Nina expressed her thoughts on how these surveillance techniques can impact the relationship between employees and employers, saying “I think that with every important relationship, in the workplace and beyond, what bonds relationships and makes them powerful is trust.” She explains further, “When an employer communicates to employees that they are using these surveillance techniques, it is saying it lacks trust in the employee. It can be demoralizing and, moreover, it can actually lead to less productivity by the employees, who become more concerned about the surveillance than they are about their work product. It’s counterproductive; it really is.”
